The Bird Goddess – Counted Cross Stitch Pattern – Romanian Embroidery Motif

I found this motif on an old traditional Romanian blouse (IA) that my great grandmother handmade when she was young, somewhere around 1925-1930. I tried for many months to find the meaning of this symbol and from my initial research I gathered that it represents “The Bird Goddess” – the one who can be seen only by the pure at heart. In ancient times it was believed that she is the one to guide the souls to Heaven when the time comes.

Later on I came across a resource that mentions that this motif has its origins in Byzantine Empire or Ottoman Empire and appeared on Romanian territories when they were invaded by the Ottomans.
