Danubian Grapes – version 2 – Counted Cross Stitch Pattern – Romanian Embroidery Inspired Motif

This symbol was created based on an old embroidery that I found on a sleeve that was once part of my grandfather’s wedding long shirt. According to traditional custom, before her wedding, the girl embroidered a shirt for her future husband. He would receive it as a gift from her on the wedding day and would wear it the following night for the first time.

This pattern is an adaptation of the original symbol and the colours are a little softer than the original ones. Although I couldn’t find any reference towards the meaning of it, I know that on the southern part of Romania, along the Danube River, almost every house used to have a small vineyard as part of its backyard. Each family would proudly make it’s own wine.

There are lots of motifs embroidered on the border of traditional shirts found on this side of the country that have decorations symbolizing flowers or grapes on long vines. Based on this information and the colours and shape of the original symbol I named this pattern Danubian Grapes-2.
