“The Guiding Star” or “The Northern Star” is the one that is destined to guide you through life and help you make the right choices. This symbol is found in many cultures represented in different ways but this is the way you will see it stitched on Romanian traditional embroidered garments. The colours used are red (a symbol of good energy which often has a role of protection in our culture) and black (the richness of the earth, the wealth). Romanians used to embroider their traditional blouses only on white homemade fabric as a symbol of purity. Nothing was randomly chosen and everything had a meaning.

The symbol you will be stitching could be a gift and a wish for someone dear to you, it could be a way to decorate your own Christmas Tree and make a wish for yourself or say a prayer every time you are working on one. Or, it could simply be a way of sharing the beauty of your culture if you have the same origins as me and live far from home.

This is a downloadable PDF pattern and guidelines that include 3 pages with detailed step by step instruction that will help you complete this project. It does not come with the supplies but you will get:

– reference photo of finished decoration
– a list of what you need
– suggestions of how to use it
– enlarged pattern
– step by step instructions

This design was initially stitched on 14 count white Aida Cloth, and it measures 7 cm by 7 cm (2.7″ by 2.7″). You could also use:
– 11 count Aida Cloth for a larger ornament
– 16 count Aida Cloth for a smaller size
– any even weaved fabric suitable for counted cross stitch
